Project Description

For this project our clients worked in the film industry and the vision they had for their home was inspired by the 80s and barber shop look. The unit was in a beautiful Heritage building so immediately, we made the decision that the design wouldn’t be super modern. We came up with a combination of the old and new to give the look our clients wanted by combining all the black finishes with the butcher block and wood accents. These elements helped the style come to life and meet in the middle.

Background on the building and unit prior to Renocon’s involvement.

The building was originally constructed in 1906, then was converted into a residential building in 1982. It was the first heritage loft conversion of its time in crosstown and is one of Vancouver’s finest examples of authentic, “loft style” living. Rich in character and history, with original brick exterior and interior walls, exposed post and beam construction, wood casement windows and exposed wood ceilings.

This is our first step. We imagine the space by lining it up with our client’s lifestyle. Reimagined space that pushes the limitations of what is possible in concrete condos.

Firstly we removed as many walls as possible to create the open space. Before we started the project there was a very small kitchen with almost no storage. We knew right away we needed to expand it. Combining the dining and kitchen together allowed for a larger kitchen and big dining area which made the space multifunctional and doubled as work space for when our clients worked from home.

The conceptual birth of your future space starts here. Creativity, inspiration and cutting edge materials are what Renocon uses to make your dream a reality.

We focused on bold accents and finding a way to achieve the barber look our clients wanted but in a more modern way. The exposed wood ceiling and brick accent wall was asking for a combination of concrete. We decided to use a polished concrete floor which really gave the unit that loft feeling. We were very happy with how the combination looks as it flows together so well.

Here we show you some of the key design decisions made in this project and how they impacted the overall spaceplan and desired outcome from the clients.

We added a “magic corner” to utilize the awkward space in the back corner cabinet and we put drawers inside the pantry. Again, all with storage in mind and making sure we used every inch of space possible.

For this unit we didn’t focus on one feature but rather aimed to have the entire unit work together as one large feature itself.

In the bathroom we used a combination of black with gold light and plumbing fixtures. We finished it off with a concrete finish on the floor which really worked out for a smaller space.

Vanity and Medicine Cabinet.

To follow the 80’s look we went with a mid-century modern medicine cabinet and vanity to still provide storage but also achieve the right style.

We exposed the existing old wood from the 1920’s from the ceiling and added a drop ceiling in the kitchen which allowed us to bring pot lights into the kitchen but also can kept to the character of the building.

Proudly present the final product of all of our services combined to create a lifestyle space uniquely for our client.
